Imam Husain’s uprising – manifestation of the Holy Qur’an (1)
On the start of the mourning month of Muharram, we offer condolences to all our listeners on the tragic martyrdom of Imam Husain (PBUH), the grandson and 3rd Infallible Heir of the Almighty’s Last and Greatest Messenger to mankind, Prophet Mohammad (Blessings of God upon him and his progeny).
We have prepared a series of daily programmes on the occasion. Now we have the first part of our tribute to the Immortal Martyrs of Karbala titled: “Imam Husain’s uprising – manifestation of the Holy Qur’an”.
The uprising of Karbala and the epic of the Day of Ashura or the 10th of Muharram is a unique revolution in the history of mankind that rejuvenated Islam and all humanitarian values by revealing truth and exposing in a very short time the evil of the usurper Omayyad regime, despite the propaganda of the tyrants to mislead the Muslim masses, regarding Imam Husain (AS) and the Blessed Ahl al-Bayt.
Imam Husain (AS), like his father Imam Ali (AS) and his elder brother Imam Hasan (AS), was the Qur’an an-Nateq, which means the Speaking Qur’an or the Qur’an in action. That is why the uprising of Karbala is indeed manifestation of the ayahs of God Almighty’s Revealed Word, the holy Qur’an.
The Prophet before leaving the mortal world had on divine commandment ordered Muslims to hold fast to the Thaqalayn or the Two Priceless Things he was leaving behind, that is, the holy Qur’an and his progeny the Ahl al-Bayt. He had warned Muslims against deserting either of the two, saying if they do it, they will deviate from the truth, since the holy Qur’an and the blessed Ahl al-Bayt are never separate from each other.
A famous hadith says the Earth exists because of the presence upon it of an Infallible Representative of God. The Prophet of Islam was the last of divine messengers, and after him the chain of God’s representation on earth was entrusted to the 12 Infallible Imams of his household, of whom the first was Imam Ali (AS). Likewise, the Qur’an cannot be properly understood except by adherence to the teachings of the Infallible Imams.
Imam Husain (AS) as the Representative of God upon earth was manifestation of the holy Qur’an. He saw the worsening situation of the Islamic society in the days of the tyrant Mu’awiyah, who in his last act of wickedness nominated his libertine son Yazid as caliph in violation of the letter and spirit of the holy Qur’an.
How could Imam Husain (AS) keep silent vis-à-vis such a great crime? It was incumbent upon him to challenge the tyrant, who was demanding oath of allegiance from him.
Imam Husain (AS), whether in Medina or Mecca or for that matter in any other place, right till the last moments of his life on courting martyrdom in Karbala, always spoke of the holy Qur’an and his unflinching love for the Book of God. He taught not just the people of his era but also of all subsequent eras of the wisdom of Qur’anic guidelines in order to defeat corruption and oppression in society.
Yazid was notorious for corruption and debauchery. He wanted to extract oath of allegiance to his godless rule from Imam Husain (AS). He instructed his governor in Medina, Waleed ibn Otbah, to convey his demand to the Prophet’s grandson. Imam Husain (AS) by reciting the ayahs of the holy Qur’an refused and decided to expose the criminal visage of the Omayyad regime.
He had to stage a unique uprising in order to save Islam and humanitarian values. On the Day of Ashura in the year of 61 AH, a glorious manifestation took place. He achieved immortal martyrdom, of which scholars, writers and artists have presented in different forms and from various angles, the gist of which is the synchronization of Imam Husain (AS) with the holy Qur’an in his immortal uprising.
