  • At least 19 killed, 14 injured in explosion at Tehran medical centre

An explosion at a medical center in the Iranian capital of Tehran has left at least 19 people dead and more than a dozen others injured.

According to Press TV, the incident, reportedly caused after the explosion of three gas canisters, took place in one of the ground floors of Sina At'har Medical Center in northern Tehran late on Tuesday.

Several emergency response units, including ambulances and firefighters, were seen deployed on site as smoke billowed from the building.

Health officials announced that at least 19 people lost their lives in the incident and 14 others sustained injuries, with reports saying the injured were immediately transferred to a hospital.

A spokesman for Tehran's Fire Department told state TV that the blast occurred as gas canisters caught fire in the medical center's basement.

Some of the victims "were in upper floors in operation rooms, who were either patients being operated on or those with them," the spokesman said. "They unfortunately lost their lives due to the heat and thick smoke."

The Department stressed that the blaze was extinguished in less than two hours.
