Iran, Qatar can help regional states find stable arrangements to solve problems: FM Zarif
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has once again reiterated the Islamic Republic's principled stance on opposing policies based on bullying, saying Iran and Qatar can help regional states reach stable arrangements to solve their problems.
Zarif made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Ale Thani who arrived in Tehran on Monday at the head of a high-ranking delegation to hold talks with Iranian authorities on bilateral issues and regional and international developments.
He said regional countries need to strengthen cooperation and find "stable" arrangements to settle issues in the region, emphasizing that relations between Iran and Qatar can play a leading role to that end.
In an interview with Bloomberg television news network on January 19, the Qatari foreign minister called on the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council member states to enter negotiations with neighboring Iran in order to patch up their differences.
Ale Thani said the time was right for Doha to broker such talks, and that he has long called for a summit between leaders of the six-member Council and Iranian officials.
The Iranian foreign minister welcomed his Qatari counterpart’s call for the Persian Gulf Arab countries to hold talks with Iran, saying Tehran has long demanded cooperation among neighbors towards establishing a strong West Asia.
Elsewhere in his Monday meeting, the top Iranian diplomat hailed an agreement reached between Doha and Riyadh to end a three-year feud by reopening the Saudi airspace and land and sea borders to Qatar.
He said Iran is ready to boost cooperation with Qatar in different fields.
The visiting Qatari foreign minister, for his part, expressed his country's readiness to improve all-out ties with Iran, particularly in the economic sector and hailed the Islamic Republic's assistance to Doha during the Saudi-led embargo.
He said his visit to Tehran aims to expand mutual relations in line with regular consultations between the two sides.
Ale Thani stressed the importance of adopting new approaches and bolstering cooperation in the region and said Doha is keen to play an effective and key role in this regard.
He expressed hope that issues in the region would be solved within the framework of regional initiatives as soon as possible.
The Iranian and Qatari foreign ministers also exchanged views about ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
