  • Leader appoints new chief for Iranian Navy, urges efforts to bolster capabilities of naval forces

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has named a new Navy chief, calling on him to do his utmost to promote the capabilities of the country’s naval forces.

According to Press TV, in a decree on Tuesday, Ayatollah Khamenei, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Iranian Armed Forces, promoted Shahram Irani to the rank of Rear Admiral and appointed him as commander of the Navy.

The Navy is one of Iran’s two maritime military branches alongside the Navy of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

Irani will replace Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi, who had held the position since 2017.

Ayatollah Khamenei said that the appointment was made in view of the commander’s commitment to his duties and positive work experience and upon a proposal by the Army commander.

The Leader stressed the need for serious efforts toward putting the capacities of the Army and Armed Forces to good use in order to pave the way for the Navy to make progress and boost its capabilities.

He also praised Rear Admiral Khanzadi for his effective efforts during his tenure over the past four years.
