  • Iran, Turkey discuss management of joint water resources

The foreign ministers of Iran and Turkey weighed plans for cooperation between the two neighbors in the protection of the environment and management of the water resources that they share.

According to Tasnim news agency, in a telephone conversation on Tuesday evening, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed the latest developments in the bilateral ties as well as a series of regional and international issues.

The Turkish foreign minister congratulated Amirabdollahian and the Iranian people and government on Eid al-Fitr, stressing the need to take effective and tangible steps to boost the friendly ties between the two countries.

He also underscored Ankara’s readiness to convene the 7th Supreme Council of Strategic Bilateral Cooperation and to arrange plans for the Turkish president’s visit to Tehran.

Cavusoglu then noted that pursuant to an agreement between Iran and Turkey, he will pursue the environmental issues and the management of common water resources through the relevant institutions in Turkey and by continuing the joint water committee’s sessions.

For his part, Amirabdollahian congratulated Cavusoglu on Eid al-Fitr and noted that the continuation of visits by the high-ranking officials of the two countries are in line with the expansion and development of Tehran-Ankara ties.

He then described an upcoming meeting of the Supreme Council of Strategic Bilateral Cooperation as a key step toward promoting relations, realizing the interests of both nations, and expanding the bilateral ties.

Amirabdollahian also emphasized the necessity of cooperation between Iran and Turkey in the protection of the environment and the management of joint water resources.

He then stressed the need to resolve the remaining issues in this regard and to speed up cooperation between Tehran and Ankara within the framework of the joint water committee given the importance of the issue of climate change.

The foreign ministers of Iran and Turkey finally stressed the need for continued consultations on the bilateral relations as well as the regional and international issues of mutual concern.
