President: Iran should achieve self-sufficiency in basic food supplies
Iran's President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi instructed the Agriculture Ministry to devise scientific plans to make the country self-sufficient in the production of basic commodities and end reliance on imports.
According to Tasnim news agency, speaking at a meeting of the cabinet on Wednesday, President Raeisi highlighted the significance of ensuring food security and achieving self-sufficiency in the production of basic and strategic commodities.
“The Agriculture Ministry should make plans in cooperation with other institutions, including scientific and knowledge-based centers, to make the country self-sufficient in the production of basic goods in the shortest possible time, so that we’d not need (imports from) other countries anymore,” the president added.
He further pointed to the escalation of dust pollution in various provinces, especially in southwestern Iran, stressing that resolution of the problem requires cooperation among the neighbors and regional countries.
President Raeisi assigned the Iranian Department of Environment to work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant organizations in order to address the air pollution caused by haze and particles through consultations with the neighboring states.
The air quality levels have seen an alarming drop in Tehran and other cities of Iran in recent days, which authorities blame on devastating dust storms emanating from neighboring Iraq and Syria.
