In the path of the Imam (37)
Welcome to this week's episode of the series "In the Path of the Imam". In this episode, we discuss the views of the Founder of Islamic Republic of Iran, late Imam Khomeini (God's mercy upon him) on the spiritual, political, and social aspects of the Haj pilgrimage.
In the last episode, we spoke of the standpoint of late Imam Khomeini, as a major jurisprudent, about daily prayers, noting that the Father of Islamic Revolution considered observance of daily prayers a manifestation of monotheism; as the goal of all divine prophets, and a God-given gift, bestowed upon mankind. We also mentioned some of the memories of the associates of late Imam, noting that late Imam was highly committed to observance of daily prayers, and recommended ritual prayers, and nightly recommended ritual prayers were always observed by the Father of Islamic Revolution. Today, we elaborate upon late Imam's outlook toward the spiritual, social, and political aspects of Haj pilgrimage.
Holy Quran attaches significant importance to observance of Haj rituals, to an extent that one of the Surahs of Holy Quran is named after Haj pilgrimage. Furthermore, numerous other ayahs in other Surahs of Holy Quran have referred to Haj rituals.
In the divine religion of Islam, within a specific period of time throughout the year, a large number of Muslims from different parts of the world observe Hajj rituals. The Haj pilgrimage, in addition to presenting many spiritual benefits for Haj pilgrims, is one of the manifestations of unity and solidarity of Muslims and a display of the political might of the World of Islam. Given the emphasis of Holy Quran, and the Prophet of Islam's Infallible Household (PBUT) on Haj rituals, late Imam maintained an especial outlook toward Haj rituals, and its spiritual, political, and social capacities, and always emphasized the three important dimensions of Haj pilgrimage. The first dimension of Haj rituals is its major role in the growth and development of purity and spirituality of Muslims and its large-scale capacity in self-growth of Haj pilgrims. Secondly, Haj pilgrimage plays a paramount role in establishment and reinforcement of the unity and solidarity of Muslims, in addition to cementing the strength of the World of Islam against enemies. Thirdly, Haj rituals plays a decisive role in the interactions and exchange of information and views among Muslims of different parts of the world, which in turn helps resolve the problems which Islamic countries are faced with.
Late Imam pointed out that Haj pilgrimage leads to establishment of a strong and wholehearted bond between Muslims and the Prophet of Islam, Mohammad (Blessings of God upon him and his progeny), as well as other divine prophets, such as Prophet Abraham, and Prophet Ismail. Late Imam also called on Muslims to contemplate about the philosophy behind Haj rituals.
In the view of late Imam, reinforcement of the solidarity of Muslims against the suppressive regimes is one of the other aspects of the existing philosophy behind Haj rituals. Given the paramount importance that late Imam attached to the social and political aspects of Haj rituals in cementing the unity of Muslims, he always called on Iranian pilgrims to maintain their unity. In an address to Iranian Haj pilgrims, late Imam underscored: "The Iranian Haj pilgrims should know that the Major and Minor Haj Pilgrimages are the biggest gathering of Muslims from across the globe, and the most beautiful epitome of the solidarity of Muslims. Hence, they should prudently and appropriately display their morality and unity, and should maintain a positive and amicable viewpoint toward each other, while also remaining vigilant against divisive conspiracies."
Late Imam Khomeini (God's mercy upon him), as a major Shia Source of Emulation, always called on Shia Haj pilgrims to respect Sunni Muslims, and to avoid measures which would cause discord among Muslims, throughout Haj rituals.
Late Imam Khomeini considered establishment and maintenance of interactions and exchange of views among Muslims as the third aspect of the philosophy behind Haj rituals, and strongly believed that Muslims should exchange their outlooks throughout Haj rituals, in order to help solve the problems which Muslims and Islamic countries are faced with.
Late Imam also placed significant importance on the political aspect of Haj rituals. The Father of Islamic Revolution pointed out that organization of the ceremony of disavowal of disbelievers is one of the important manifestations of the political and social aspects of Haj rituals, and believed that this huge gathering, upon expression of its resentment towards polytheists, can help solve many of the problems which Muslims are encountering.
