In the path of the Imam (41)
Welcome to this week's episode of the series "In the Path of the Imam". Today, we elaborate upon the piety and simple lifestyle of the Father of Islamic Revolution, late Imam Khomeini (God's mercy upon him).
In the past few weeks, the views of late Imam in regard to daily prayers, fasting in the holy month of Ramadan, promotion of virtues and prevention of vice, and Hajj rituals were studied. Furthermore, last week, we familiarized you with the standpoint of the Founder of Islamic Republic of Iran, late Imam Khomeini (God's mercy upon him) about beneficial science. One of the aspects which distinguished the Father of Islamic Revolution from other global political leaders, was his piety and simple lifestyle. Undoubtedly, familiarization with this characteristic trait of late Imam will be highly interesting and educational for you.
In accordance with the outlook of numerous philosophers, one of the most important hurdles to full development and perfection of mankind is his attachment to the materialistic manifestations of the mortal world. If the individual is dominated by his attachment to the mortal world, all human values would thereafter be overshadowed and undermined by this worldly desire. Philosophers strongly believe that in order to liberate oneself from the yoke of luring manifestations of the mortal world there is no approach better than piety and adoption of a simple lifestyle; far from the luxuries of the material world. Meanwhile, a pious individual does not maintain a sense of belonging to the material world. This in-depth outlook toward the mortal world is not understood by those, who are under the influence of the material world.
Meanwhile, all of the allies and enemies of the Founder of Islamic Republic of Iran have pointed out that late Imam was one of the most prominent pious figures of his time. Late Imam maintained a simple lifestyle, rooted in the teachings of Holy Quran and leading Islamic figures, namely the Prophet of Islam, Mohammad (Blessings of God upon him and his progeny), and the Infallible Imams of Prophet Mohammad's Household (PBUT). In other words, the piety and simple lifestyle of late Imam were rooted in his religious and divine standpoint.
One of the main role models of piety for Imam Khomeini, was Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). Furthermore, the viewpoints of the First Infallible Successor to Prophet Mohammad, Imam Ali (AS), highly influenced late Imam Khomeini.
Late Imam called on all Islamic Ulema and the officials of the sacred Islamic system to refrain from the luxuries and formalities of the mortal world. Late Imam underscored that in his view, the majority of the accomplishments of clerics and their profound influence on the Islamic community stemmed from their piety and scientific value, and these values should not be forgotten in the contemporary world, and in fact should be emphasized more than ever.
The recommendations of the Father of Islamic Revolution to the officials of the sacred Islamic establishment stem from how the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (AS) handled the officials of his ruling system. Imam Ali (AS) was an elevated role model of piety, frugality, and simple lifestyle. When Imam Ali (AS) discovered that one of his officials had attended the lavish wedding ceremony of an individual, he wrote a strongly-worded letter to that official, reprimanding him for attending that lavish wedding ceremony.
The simple and modest lifestyle of the Founder of Islamic Republic of Iran, late Imam Khomeini (God's mercy upon him) astounded many foreign visitors. According to Major Hussein Mortazi: "On the auspicious occasion of the Ten-Day Dawn, around thirty foreign guests had traveled to Iran in order to be received by late Imam. Among these foreign visitors was an elderly bearded American Muslim. Upon entry to the courtyard of late Imam's house, that elderly American Muslim man was highly surprised over late Imam's humble home, repeatedly asking others whether that humble home was late Imam's place of residence. Then he asked where late Imam was. We told him to remain patient and to wait. It was highly surprising for that elderly American Muslim to observe that the grand leader of the Islamic community, whose messages had a profound influence on the world, was residing in such a humble home.
Upon seeing late Imam, tears of joy welled in the eyes of that elderly American Muslim man."
