Path towards Enlightenment (880)
Welcome to our weekly programme "Path towards Enlightenment" in which we present you a fluent and easy-to-understand explanation of the ayahs of God’s Revealed Word to all humanity, the holy Qur’an. We continue from where we left you last week, and here are Ayahs 24 and 25 of Surah Fussilat:
“Should they be patient (in bearing the torture, it will be of no avail since) the Fire is their abode; and should they seek to propitiate, they will not be redeemed.
“We have assigned them companions who make to seem decorous to them whatever is before them (of their conduct during life) and whatever is behind them (that is their evil legacy), and the word became due against them, as it did against the nations that passed away before them of jinn and humans. They were indeed losers.”
As you might recall last Friday, we said that before being cast into the fires of hell, the disbelievers and unrepentant sinners will witness the various organs of their own body, bearing testimony to what evil they had done in the world, so as to seal the argumentation against them.
The Ayahs that we now recited to you mean to say that neither patience nor crying shall be of any avail to the unbelievers in Hell, since repentance is out of question and should have been made during the transient life of the mortal world. In other words, those who had died in the state of unbelief by denying God, ascribing partners to Him, or rejecting the messages of the Prophets, to become atheists, polytheists, and rejecters of truth, shall have Hellfire as their permanent abode. As a matter of fact their regret is not sincere and is the result of their tasting the Divine punishment, which means there is no way out for them from Hell, because of their intransigence in wasting the opportunities and years of relief to repent, reform, and rectify their wrongs that the All-Merciful Lord had given them in the world.
The next Ayah refers to the choice of wayward companions that one makes in life and ultimately suffers the consequences. By nature human beings are inclined towards good and beauty, but when the choice is erroneous, the seducers take advantage to mislead and to make vicious acts appear as fair and justified, as a consequence of which, reflection on the path of truth and repentance of disbelief and misdeeds, is put off. For example, the heart was supposed to embrace angels instead devils frequent it. Consequently, companions from amongst the evil and devilish elements are assigned as their friends, who take such a complete hold of their mindset that all vicious deeds seem fair to them.
As a result, the disbelievers and unrepentant sinners who follow Satan and their vain desires, shall be losers, like the sinful and unbelieving nations of the past, whether of the human race or from the species of jinn, for whom Divine punishment was justified. In other words, those who have lost their life shall reap nothing but regret and grief.
These ayahs teach us the following points:
- As long as we are alive, we have plenty of opportunity to repent, reform ourselves, and rectify our wrong beliefs, since after death and Resurrection, there is no chance for repentance.
- We ought to be wise in selecting friends and companions because they affect us and influence our mind and heart.
- Anyone who praises evil deeds and make them look fair is indeed an open enemy.
- Those who are atheists, polytheists, and deniers of the message of the Prophets, are indeed the miserable losers in the Hereafter.
Now let us listen to or read Ayahs 26, 27 and 28 of this Surah:
“The faithless say, ‘Do not listen to this Qur’an and hoot it down so that you may prevail [over the Prophet].’
“We will surely make the faithless taste a severe punishment, and We will surely requite them by the worst of what they used to do.
“That is the requital of the enemies of Allah —the Fire! In it they will have an everlasting abode, as a requital for their belying Our signs.”
Propaganda against religion has existed at all times. Those whose words do not stand to reason, hinder people from listening to the logical words expressed by the virtuous persons.
These Ayahs refer to some of the evil deeds of the pagan Arabs of Mecca at the time of the recitation of the Holy Qur’an by Prophet Mohammad (blessings of God upon him and his progeny).
It is narrated that the pagan Arab chiefs, having failed to understand the logic of the Holy Qur’an or to compose any verse resembling its unmatched eloquence, were afraid that people from different regions will come to Mecca and believe in the Prophet’s invitation to Islam. They thus resorted to mischievous tactics to distract the audience of the Prophet and prevent them from listening to the timeless wisdom of the Holy Qur’an, by loudly singing songs, uttering vain words, whistling, and clapping their hands.
This same practice persists today in various forms. The enemies of truth do not want people to become aware of the enlightening message of the Holy Qur’an and the rationality of the teachings of the Prophet’s Immaculate Household, the Ahl al-Bayt. Global Arrogance and its agents indulge in misuse of the media to broadcast lies, screen obscene films in the name of entertainment, publish blasphemous novels, and even resort to mischievous paintings and art works in the name of freedom of expression, in order to ridicule religious values and cast doubts and ambiguities in the minds of unsuspecting persons.
Ayah 27 thus warns disbelievers of the severe punishment they will taste for indulging in such satanic acts to promote evil in society and prevent people from listening to the voice of reason, as a consequence of their evil deeds.
Ayah 28 calls such evil persons the “enemies of God”, and says the torment shall be very painful for those denying Divine signs, with the fire of the eternal inferno being their permanent abode, as a recompense for their atheism, polytheism, and an evil life of unrepentant sins in violating of the messages of the Prophets.
In spite of the efforts the devils in human form are making to distort the true message and visage of Islam, the rationality of the teachings of the Prophet and his Immaculate Ahl al-Bayt are spreading all over the world to enlighten the minds, hearts, and souls of the seekers of truth. No doubt, there is a very painful punishment for those who block the way of God and tarnish the image of truth, that is, Islam and the Holy Qur’an.
From these Ayahs we learn that:
- Usually those who lack logic and reasoning try in different ways to prevent others from hearing the logical word of others.
- The Holy Qur’an is attractive to those who listen with attention and its message absorbs hearts.
- The enemies cannot prevent the ultimate spread of the dynamic message of Islam.
- The everlasting fires of Hell are for those who oppose truth, oppress others, deny God to become atheists, mock at the messages of the Prophets, and ascribe partners to the One and Only Creator of the universe to end up as polytheists.
