As you know, saints and great personalities enjoy some supernatural abilities which ordinary people are deprived of. These characteristics are granted by God to His special servants. For sure, Imam Khomeini was one of such people.

He enjoyed the ability to predict some events. This is called “Karāmat” in the Islamic teachings. It should be noted that Karāmat is different from miracle. Miracle is only performed by infallible servants of God, i.e. the divine messengers and the 12 Imams of the progeny of the Prophet of Islam and Lady Fatimah Zahra (blessings of God upon them). Karāmat means to do something supernatural by a fallible person who has attained very high spiritual degrees. Miracle is performed by Prophets to prove their mission while Karāmat is done by other great servants of God who are not infallible, yet they are very pure in heart and have achieved lofty position in self-building and battling their carnal desires and evil habits. Among the Islamic sects, Mu’tazelites were the only people who denied any supernatural power for persons other than the divine messengers. Karāmat originates in one’s link with the Unseen world. That’s why he/she can see the events before their occurrence and out of their place. Miracle is performed quite overtly while Karāmat is done covertly and the great figures who are the Owliya—Allah (Friends of God) are duty-bound to conceal these acts.

According to the Islamic culture, Karāmat (ability to do supernatural acts or inform of the future events) can be obtained only through piety and purity of intention. Thus the great men (Friends of God) never try to show off their supernatural power as they intend to guide people through logic and reasoning rather than supernatural means. That’s why these people never disclose this power and even prevent their near ones to conceal it. Thus, most of the supernatural events that take place by people like Imam Khomeini are often mentioned posthumously. Exposure of this power is indeed one of the pitfalls of the Satan to misguide the Friends of God. This is a major difference between these pure-hearted people and ascetics. The ascetics in India and elsewhere endure very hard conditions to draw the attention of the people and become famous among ordinary people. But the Friends of God only obey what God has said through His messengers. They seek God’s satisfaction and love. Imam Khomeini seriously prevented his near ones from relating his ability to perform Karāmat or supernatural works. Ayatollah Nasrollah Shahbadi relates a dream that he had seen in Holy Najaf before the victory of the Islamic Revolution, saying, “Before Imam Khomeini’s coming to Najaf, one night I dreamt that Iran is in turmoil and war, especially Khuzestan. The date palms were cut on top or burnt down and one of my near ones was martyred in the war. After the Imam’s coming to Najaf, I related the dream for him. He smiled and said, ‘These events will take place.’ I forgot this word of the Imam till the revolution and after that and the Iraq-Iran war. During the war, I went to the battlefronts several times. One day, I suddenly saw the date palms which had been cut on top. There I recalled the dream and what Imam Khomeini had told me. Everything happened just as I had dreamt till in May, 1984 when my brother Mahdi was martyred. Once more I remembered that the Imam had said that all those events would one day happen.”

Hojjat-ol-Eslam Seyyed Mohammad Reza Sajjadi Esfahani mentions an interesting memory of the Imam which shows his ability to perform Karāmat, “In the days of Imam Khomeini’s stay in Holy Najaf, it was very hard to take money to Iraq. One of the clergymen from Isfahan said, ‘I took a preacher from Syria and from there to Baghdad. I saw that everything was being searched at the airport. I was very worried and upset. I sought intercession with Imam Musa Kazem (Peace upon him). I appealed to him, saying, ‘My Master, I am taking this money to your grandson; so, you help me.’ At that moment, I saw somebody from the Iraqi government calling me and giving me leave. Later on when I entered Najaf, went to the Imam and I greeted him. He smiled and said, ‘You had some problem at the airport and you sought intercession with Musa ibn Ja’far.’ I noticed that he was quite aware of the issue.”

Another memory had been mentioned from the Imam on a terror attempt against him, “When the Imam was in Paris, some of his enemies told a pseudo-clergy to hide a pistol in his turban and assassinate Imam Khomeini. When this fake clergyman came and the Imam was informed that a scholar wanted to visit him, he said, ‘Tell him to take off his turban and then enter.’ Thus, one of the conspiracies for assassination of the Imam was foiled.”

During the Hajj ceremonies of the year 1987, a big number of the Iranian pilgrims were martyred by the military and security forces of the Saudi regime. Nobody was aware of the event and the heinous crime lay bare the real image of the Wahhabi cult dominating over the two Sanctuaries, the Holy Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. But the point to note was Imam Khomeini’s message on the occasion of Hajj which suite differed from the messages of the previous years. He had mentioned an ayah of the Qur’an which invited the pilgrims toward martyrdom. Interestingly, the Imam didn’t change the message upon the request of his son and the officials of Hajj. In other words, he had predicted the martyrdom of a number of the pilgrims in his message. Hojjat-ol-Eslam Emam Jamarani says, “Imam Khomeini, according to every year’s tradition, would issue a message to the pilgrims. In 1987, when we went to Hajj, from the very beginning of landing in Jeddah till the rally to Medina, we were very satisfied with the behavior of the Saudi government and agents. The Imam’s son said that he was surprised when he had seen the introduction and the ayah in the beginning of the message. He was astonished as why the Imam had called on the pilgrims to martyrdom and migration like Imam Hussein (AS). He says that after consulting with Mr. Ansari they had gone to the Imam, saying that the ayah was not compatible with the rituals and ceremonies of Hajj. But the Imam told them to communicate the message to the mass media and Iranian pilgrims in Medina. The message was issued on the first of Zil-Hijja and the bloody tragedy of Mecca occurred on the sixth of Zil-Hijja. This revealed the Imam’s unique Karāmat.”
